The GRM Daily Rated Awards are back and twitter is abuzz with people sharing their votes and discussing the nominations. The event which premiered last year was hugely successful and is sure to be an exciting night again this year. The list is jam packed with talent so I thought I’d run you through both the nomination list and who I voted for.
My Vote: AJ Tracey
There were several names in this category who I rate and you’d find in my music library but my decision, like many, was between Dave and AJ Tracey. I’ve been a fan of Dave for time and introduced a lot of my mates to his music long before he hit the radar of the majority via his “Fire in the Booth”. I won’t lie, I only came across AJ Tracey because Dave was on his Spirit Bomb remix but from then onward I was hooked. I downloaded his past EPs, watched his Fire in the Booth and have supported his releases since. My vote went to AJ simply because he is further in his career than Dave, he’s released more music and in my eyes is therefore CURRENTLY more worthy of recognition in the form of a breakthrough award. The quality of both of their works is the same so in this case it is quantity over quality.
Skepta – Man (Gang)
Kano – This Is England
Nines – Intro
Giggs – Whippin Escurtion
Wretch 32 x Avelino – Hulk Hogan
Mr Bigz – Beluga Bitches Bollinger
Tinie Tempah ft. Wizkid – Mamacita
Tinie Tempah – Girls Like
Ghetts – U Dun Know Already
Lethal Bizzle – Wobble
My Vote: Kano – This is England
Although facing stiff competition from the stylised video of Risky Roadz’ work for ‘Man (Gang)” and the dabbing dance troop featured in Giggs’ “Whippin Escurtion” my vote went to Kano. His whistle-stop tour of the UK complimented the song perfectly and the recipient of the lifetime achievement award surely deserves to add this one too his trophy cabinet as well.
My Vote: DJ Spyro
I’m not a regular listener of a lot of these DJs so this was only going to be between Rude Kid for his show on Kiss FM, Spyro for his show on Rinse FM and Logan for his shows on 1xtra and more recently Radio 1. I went with Spyro as I’d just finished watching his recent set alongside Mez & PK. If you’ve seen itm and any of his other “The Grime Show” sets, you’ll understand why I gave Spyro my vote.
Producer of the Year
My Vote: Nyge
Another stacked group so I’ll stick to my reasoning for voting for Nyge. A name probably not recognised by many, Nyge is responsible for some big tracks and I feel is more than deserving of being recognised with an award. From his recent work on AJ Tracey’s ‘Leave me Alone’, back to Section Boyz’ ‘Lock Arf’ and then the MixtapeOfTheYear featured Bonkaz track “Heart”; he always proves his talent. Although he doesn’t have the back catalogue some of the bigger names nominated do, I feel like this award could propel his career.
Personality of the Year
Poet & Vuj
3 Shots Of Tequila
My Vote: Julie Adenuga
A mixed group, but I went with Julie for pushing the scene via her Beats 1 radio show, hosting one of the Red Bull Culture Clashes and just generally being a good personality within the scene for years.
Fekky – Brandy & Coke
67 – In Skengs We Trust
MoStack – Gangster With Banter
Ghetts x Rude Kid – 653
Wretch 32 & Avelino – Young Fire Old Flame
Kojey Radical – 23 Winters
Chip – Rap vs Grime
Bonkaz – Mixtape of the Year
Youngs Teflon – Trillin 2
P Money – Money Over Everyone 2
My Vote: Bonkaz – Mixtape of the Year
This was one of the easiest votes for me. Mixtape of the Year is one of the only projects I listen to all the way through on a regular basis. There isn’t a single track on there that I don’t rate and it’s a safe bet I’ll pick “Like That” from the mixtape if you pass me the AUX. A lot of the other mixtapes nominated I rate highly as well but simply because of the amount of playtime I’ve given ‘Mixtape of the Year’ I had to give it my vote and backing. Hopefully we get a part two soon.
With “Best Artist”, “Best Album” and the “KA Get Rated Award” being industry voted my opinion is completely irrelevant but I’ll give you it anyway. I’d go Skepta for “Best Artist” simply due to his impact on spreading grime as a genre worldwide, “Don’t Panic” by Section Boyz would get “Best Album” and Snowy would receive the KA Drinks Get Rated award.
Best Track was not a category listed as industry votedm and the nomination list isn’t released until August 15thm so we’ll have to wait and see what’s going on when that date comes around.
Make sure you cast your vote at http://ratedawards.com/voting and be in with the chance to win a pair of tickets to the awards show itself and big up GRM Daily and KA Drinks for celebrating the talent and works of the scene with the event.
